The Club flag is at half-mast this week as we announce the death of George Ward, long-standing member of the Club, who died peacefully on 9th May after a long illness.
George and his wife May (who died in 2016) moved to Tring in the mid 1970s. George soon became a member of the Club and was Secretary from 1980-1983. He umpired for many years: in George's first game umpiring for the 1s, Martin Lawrence was Captain and he primed the keeper and slips that whatever happened on the first delivery, they were to appeal loudly. The ball passed the bat, Martin clicked his heels and all the fielders went up.
But George wasn't having any of it: he looked disapprovingly at Martin as he said 'Not Out', and so passed the test.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and one Sunday afternoon at the Club was particularly memorable. George umpired, his son-in-law David Mosley was Captain, his eldest grandchild Gary Mosley opened the bowling, his second eldest grandchild Grant Mosley opened the batting, his wife May scored, while his daughter Susan knitted another cricket jumper. Obviously, Tring Park won the game.
He enjoyed most sports, and was a keen suppoter of Watford and Arsenal FCs, as well as being a very useful golfer and bowls player.
Owing to the current restrictions, the cremation will small and private.
Thank you to David Mosley for this update.
