Back in the day, land was divided up into 22-yard patches known as a chain. Architects literally had a 22-yard chain that they would go around with and measure stuff. These specific chains had 100 links, so they could look at sub-divisions and work out, for example, what 10 yards is. As a form of measurement, it’s been replaced by several simpler systems, but it’s still used for cricket pitches. Mostly because can you imagine how much bowlers would moan if someone suggested changing it?
